Acura Kills ZDX, Focuses on Honda-Engineered RSX EV

Acura has officially ceased production of the ZDX, its initial foray into the electric vehicle market. While the ZDX offered decent performance, solid technology sourced from General Motors, and a spacious interior, it was often viewed as less of a true Acura product due to its shared GM platform and components.

The automaker cited "market conditions" as the driving force behind the decision to discontinue the ZDX. Although sales were respectable, they were likely bolstered by EV tax credits and incentives. The timing aligns with the anticipated conclusion of the federal EV tax credit program, which would have presented a significant hurdle to future sales.

Despite the ZDX's assembly occurring in the United States alongside the Chevrolet Blazer EV, thereby avoiding recently implemented Japanese import tariffs, the loss of the $7,500 tax credit appears to have been a critical factor. This news has sparked speculation regarding the future of the Honda Prologue, which shares many similarities with the ZDX and Blazer EV. However, Honda has affirmed its commitment to continuing Prologue production.

Acura's electric ambitions are far from extinguished. The company is heavily invested in the upcoming RSX, an all-electric SUV designed and engineered entirely by Honda. This promises to address previous concerns about the ZDX by delivering a truly Honda-built EV experience.

The RSX, previewed in prototype form earlier this year, will be the flagship model produced at Honda's new EV Hub in Ohio, as part of its Honda 0 Series of global EVs. Key features will include the innovative Asimo operating system for infotainment, a comprehensive suite of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), and enhanced personalization options.

With the ZDX chapter closed, Acura is now focusing all its resources on the RSX. The official unveiling is expected soon, with production slated to commence in 2026. Given the timing of the ZDX announcement, there's speculation that Acura might showcase a production-ready version of the RSX as early as the upcoming L.A. Auto Show in November. The company has been contacted for further insights into the ZDX's discontinuation and the RSX's debut.
